Why: To recognize and celebrate great design and all the talented people who make it possible.

On this fine autumn evening, two days before the snow arrived, International Market Square was aglow as top Twin Cities interior designers, architects, design professionals, and friends turned out to celebrate the 25th birthday of the iconic IMS building and the 2010 American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) annual awards. It’s just so trite to say things such as, “Hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since IMS opened,” and “Can you believe that winter’s already here?” so I won’t say either. It’s far more exciting to note that IMS is still gorgeous (especially at night) and still buzzing with creative energy.

Why: To commemorate the classy dame’s 100th birthday.

On April 17, around 400 people showed up to toast the elegant St. Paul Hotel’s centennial celebration at a rollicking, decades-themed gala that spread throughout the first and lower levels of the building. As is the rule during almost all my forays to St. Paul, I often find myself suddenly lost; luckily, the hotel provided a handy map to guide me on my journey through the last century. And by “the hotel,” I mean “a little kid dressed in a newsie costume.”

Fans and friends of the renowned interior designer packed the Holly Hunt showroom at IMS to celebrate Tom Gunkelman's 80^th birthday. The celebrated designer's work can be found all around the country and has been featured in numerous magazines--and well-known clients include Garrison Keillor. Well-wishers sipped champagne and enjoyed a delicious buttercream cake before toasting the man of the hour!
