Who: Theater artists, Ivey Award honorees, philanthropists, lots of a photographers, and the "in" crowd
What: A seemingly innocent reception to celebrate the successes of the 2009 Ivey Awards, held on September 21 at the State Theatre.
Where: The Eitel Apartments' top floor "Sky Lounge"
When: Tuesday, November 3, 2009
Why: To thank the folks who helped make the Iveys such a glamorous event, on track to become a Midwest version of the Tony Awards.

There's something so dignified about a reception posited to "thank" a group of well-intentioned people. But as it turned out, this reception was rocking, thanks to the smart, interesting, and conversational people it attracted. Also, thanks to the folks who got boozy, but I won't name names.

Shari Aronson and Chris Griffith of Z Puppets Rosenschnoz won an Ivey for the puppet design they did Herschel and the Hannukah Goblins at the Minnesota Jewish Theatre Company. And they were, like, totally nice, too.

Good lookin’ fellows, they are—that’s the Ivey’s founder Scott Mayer with Peter Rothstein, founding artistic director of Theatre Latté Da as well as a talented freelance director.

I got to ride the elevator to the seventh-floor party along with Claudia Wilkens and Richard Ooms, a power couple among local actors. While I had her, I couldn’t help but congratulate Claudia for the “big part” she had in A Serious Man. She countered that it wasn’t a big part, since she only spoke a few lines. But then I pointed out that her name was in the opening credits—very impressive!

This year, Brave New Workshop founder Dudley Riggs was honored with the Ivey Lifetime Achievement Award. Here he’s pictured with his aesthetic cousin: architect-philanthropist Jim Smart, the guy I think will become the new Sam Kaplan, now that Sam’s left town for ambassadorship in Morocco.

Flying Foot Forum founder Joe Chvala and Buffalo Gal founder Perrin Post. Gossip alert! Post just acquired the rights to adapt Sweet Land to the stage, but she suspects it’ll be a while before the project materializes.

This poor fellow is named Stephen Stephens. But he happens to be a sexy photographer, so that’s cool.

Todd Walker is like Zelig, man—he’s everyone, or at least every party. Here he’s pictured with singer-actor Holly Schroder. Love her cowgirl look.

Two lovely singers, that’s Ann Michels with Christina Baldwin.
