Who: The Circle members, plus heavy hitters and Marie Antoinette go-go dancers
What: The Louvre and the Masterpiece Preview Party
Where: The Minneapolis Institute of Arts
When:  Saturday, October 17, 2009
Why:  To celebrate a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit, right here in Minneapolis

Given our economic climate you would think the appreciation of art, which trickles to the top of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, would be a low priority today but that just isn't the case, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts' party to celebrate the opening of The Louvre and the Masterpiece confirms it.

Friends of The Circle, the MIA's membership group for 21-44-year-olds, hosted a cocktail soirée for 1,300 MIA members to mingle in the halls of the museum-turned-nightclub for the night, and preview the exhibit, which includes 60-plus pieces of art from the last 4,000 years, that shows what makes a "masterpiece" and how its changed over time.

Like the exhibit, the crowd was a mix, from young artsy types to heavy hitters in black tie.  We spotted Marilyn Carlson Nelson, Blythe Brenden, Laysha Ward, Deb Hopp, and Marialice Harwood, to name a few.

Soirée highlights included the French Kiss cocktail, which was just as sweet as the real deal, plus go-go dansuers in Marie Antoinette-inspired getups, and oh, you know, a Vermeer over here, and a Leonardo da Vinci over there.

The Louvre and the Masterpiece runs October 18, 2009 through January, 10, 2010.
