Why: If the Vogels can do it, so can you!
You don't have to be Ralph Burnet to have a world-class art collection. That's why I love the Vogels. Dorothy and Herbert Vogel are not your typical art collectors. She's a retired librarian, he's an ex-postal worker, according to Weisman Art Museum director Lyndel King, and they used Dorothy's salary to cover day-to-day expenses while Herbert's salary was used for art acquisition. Now that's passion people.
On Friday, the Weisman hosted a reception to showcase 50 pieces that were donated to the museum out of the more than 4,000 works of art collected by the couple, in the exhibit To Have It About You: The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection.
Art scenesters and museum staff sipped wine, noshed on hors d'oeurves, browsed the art collection, and took in a video with an interview with the Vogels. Meanwhile, I tagged along with Shmarshmellow and eavesdropped on his party chat: The ladies of l'étoile were on a field trip heading to the 501 Club next; red-bearded gentleman Andy Sturdevant is having a VIB (very important birthday) soon; consultant Herman Milligan talked up his Art and Justice benefit on November 19; and some young dudes yapped about . . . what else? Art!
