What: The Ivey Awards, VIP reception
Who: Theater artists and the folks who want to bed them (boo--they only sleep with each other), otherwise known as: board members, politicians, arts critics, and a smattering of fans.
Where: The W Hotel, downtown Minneapolis
When: Monday, September 21
Why: To tear down this wall--that is, the so-called "fourth wall" (between artist and audience), but also to fête a year's worth of achievements in local theater.

The Ivey Awards are always a big reunion. There's always the chance for theatergoers to fawn over their favorite actors from the past year, including (for me) Greta Oglesby, the sensational lead from the Guthrie's production of Caroline, or Change. But it's also an opportunity for thespians to emerge from their backstage lairs and garden-level apartments, to whoop and drink with those who love them. This year, we saw the darnedest things at the Ivey Awards VIP pre-party: Sam Kaplan enthused about the free food, talented directors mingled with lawyers and other donors, and pretty actresses twirled their hair and chatted amiably with he who's hated and feared (aka the theater critic).

Actresses Carolyn Pool and Kate Eifrig are pictured with St. Paul Pioneer Press theater critic Dominic Papatola and his lovely wife Mary Jones.

A good-looking bunch, they are! Left to right: Bill Underwood, Target attorney and board member at Theatre Latté Da; Laura Pfeiffer, another attorney and a supporter of Frank Theatre; Peter Rothstein, man-about-town, co-founder of Latté Da, and a big winner at this year’s Ivey Awards; and Chris Everett, a designer and the founder of See Design.

He’s one-half of a Minneapolis photography powerhouse—Michal Daniel, a renowned and extremely talented theater photographer who shoots here as well as on the coasts. His significant other, Keri Pickett, was on assignment and unable to attend.

Photographer William Clark is responsible for those glamorous, paparazzi-style Ivey Awards ads seen around town. He’s pictured here with his wife, the stylist René Hari.

Mary Leer is so lovely, in large part because she’s booking an assortment of shows at the Lab Theater (formerly the Guthrie Lab), a space that would otherwise sit vacant.

If it’s a party, then Sam and Sylvia Kaplan are sure to be there—but not for long. President Obama recently appointed Sam as ambassador to Morocco, so they’re headed overseas on October 3.
